Why people still love Duke

March 2nd 2011 19:26
Duke Nukem embodies every action hollywood star in the 90's: like the Arnolds, Stallones and Van Dammes. He was the big, burly man idolised by big, and sometimes burly, breasted women. He is also loved by videogamers for his daring one liners and unwavering showing of his interests for the opposite sex.

But times had changed.

Video game culture today is focused on equality and the slimmer-build man. Master Chief from Halo once was the Xbox's flagship character without saying a word. What was once daring and cutting-edge before is now seen as tame and boring. One liners no longer can define a gaming character. They must have a history and motivation beyond hitting the sack with a lot of women.

So why is Duke Nukem so hotly anticipated for his return in May after over 10 years in development? Maybe the anticipation isn't for a triple A title, but for the resolution of a series plagued with nearly as many delays than the Governor Generals delaying the implementation of an R18 system for video games.

It is the older crowd of gamers who are waiting for Duke's return; the same crowd who lived in the big, burly action man era. Duke is a throwback to that time, and nostalgia is the driving force of his return.

Duke Nukem Forever will finally come out on May 6th

Duke was great all right, but my favorite was ROTT--Rise of the Triad.

I'm honestly not sure if Duke Nukem was intended to be a satire of that type of one-dimensional action hero, or if he was supposed to be such a person himself and we were just supposed to play his games for entertainment and maybe not ask so many questions. Either way, I was never a huge fan of his. First-person shooters have never really been my thing; plus his early games struck me as your basic Doom clone with slightly different weapons, plus swearing. Having seen the trailers and previews for Duke Nukem Forever, I suspect it doesn't have what I look for from games in this decade. Still, I'm sure there's a market out there for it.
