What's happening in the Gaming Spectrum: June 21-22

June 23rd 2007 02:26
Possible gaming fact: New consoles, wireless gaming, online ads and online play might be what moves the gaming industry.

Starcraft 2 heading into a Blizzard

Starcraft fans, Blizzcon is the place to be.

Lucky players, who got tickets to the sold out event, will have a chance for hands-on action with the sequel to the awesome Starcraft at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Tickets were sold out a week ago.

Since the E3 expo is held on July 11-13, while the Blizzcon is on August 3-4, this could be a chance for Starcraft 2 to receive a stronger reception after the E3 after party.

Manhunt 2 might not see the light of day, ever. (And my two cents)

Sony and Nintendo have a policy forbidding third-party developers from releasing Adult Only rated games. In this case, Take Two is the developer.

The US has marked the game with an “Adults Only” rating and Take-Two will need to censor and modify bits of the game and hand in for another ratings test, or else the game might be shelved forever.

Take-Two has released this bitching written statement:

"We continue to stand behind this extraordinary game. We believe in freedom of creative expression, as well as responsible marketing, both of which are essential to our business of making great entertainment."

Damn right, the key words in there is “responsible marketing”, if a game isn’t hyped to become a feral by censor movements with no real idea of the game except of what it is “capable of” (which most, for that reason, are against), the game would sell for its merit by people who actually want to play the game instead of using it as a “killers” guide all censor movements and concerned parents are hyping about.

Australia’s average age of people playing video games is 28. Give them a chance to decide what they can and cannot pay with their hard-earned cash.

And for all concerned parents when faced by a child who wants to buy a MA-rated game, DON’T BUY IT.

Simple.

The point I’m making is a game shelved (Like manhunt is going to be) will only make the hard working developers who, spend hours of long work and not enough sleep, the losers. No one wins, except for the people who will get good-nights sleep, thinking the world is safe for another day.

Turn on the TV, then watch the news, and see the real issues out there.

I might just be bitter because Australia just doesn’t have an R rating in the video games rating system.

Ok, back to the news spectrum…

Bioware might give Sonic a run for some money (extra two cents)

Bioware’s new handheld division will produce a new Sonic the Hedgehog video game for the DS.

Bioware are the genius creators of Never Winter Nights and the highly anticipated Mass Effect.

The game is said to be an RPG… A strike one in my book, I mean Sonic is built for SPEED, and RPG’s are great for slowly developing godly-climatic stories but not for SPEED! (My personal opinion, not news) Thinking of Sonic as a NWN’s in third person reminds me of a similar game known as Sonic 3D for the under-appreciated Sega Saturn.

My expectations for this game are evidently low.

Iphone, overpriced and over the hill (before it gets there) (and yet another two cents)

The new Iphone developed by Apple will cost between US$499 and $599, depending on configuration, once it ships in the United States (Only!) on June 29.

Did the high price for the Playstation 3 do it any favours? C’mon Apple! Despite having Web 2.0 applications and everything a PDA can do, the price is what ultimately dictates what the MAJORITY of the public will consider when deciding to buy the iphone.

No doubt about it, the world loves the Playstation franchise. There are legions upon legions of fans that arguably outweighs X box and Nintendo owners; just look ask every second person if they own a PS2. The legions have gone into hiding because they are content with the affordable PS2, while the PS3 suffers on the store shelves (The Australian launch witnessed more store employees outnumbering PS3 buyers!).

Much like the Vista program (and mixed with the reason of the PS3’s pricing), maybe the price indicates the iphone is just too ahead of its time, like the PS3.

145 Games by 2008

On the heels of news about 380 PS3 titles hitting shores by March 2008, were actually international figures including games that might be released in only one country, (*cough* Japan*cough*) Sony promises 145 games in the US by that date.

Figures include 105 shelf titles and 40 Playstation Network titles.

Quick news: Intel producing anti-cheating hardware for people who cannot control their cheating habits. And Atari will be releasing Namco’s Bandai’s Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation and Eternal Sonata by Autumn.
