Top RPG of Japan 09 – and the fastest!

December 30th 2009 07:48

Dragon Quest 9 sold over 4 million copies till last week – making it the top selling RPG game of 2009 in Japan.

Final Fantasy 13 sold nearly 1.5 million copies in three days.

Translated at Andriasang.com; Dengeki online reported ASCII Media Work’s list of the top selling games from December 29, 2008 to December 20, 2009.

Part of the top five included Wii Sports Resort, New Super Mario Bros Wii and the unreleased (in Australia) Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver.

The ninth instalment in arguably the 2nd biggest RPG franchise is yet to have an official release date in Australia. Hopefully Australia will see it in 2010. Final Fantasy 13 will be released in March, 2010.

I have yet to play an RPG on the current generation consoles, but Persona FES 3 and Persona 4 on the PS2 kept me in level grinding bliss this year.

A classic RPG released this year not to be missed is Dragon Quest: Hand of the Heavenly on the DS. A graphically updated version of Dragon Quest 5 released on the Famicom in 1992, it has the turn-based mechanics of old, but holds an engaging story that blossoms into a memorable game.
