The Racing Season Is About To Begin

May the reign of the fighting genre pause for a year as the racing genre starts to rev up their engines!
Within the past 2 years: Soul Calibur 4, Virtua Fighter 5, and Street Fighter 4 have been released in a fighting frenzy, and now has seemingly put their gloves to rest until the eventual sequels. Tekken 6 is coming late to the fight-fest, but the eyes of gamers at the end of this year will be focused on the racing giants.
The three beasts on the track are Gran Turismo 5, Need For Speed: Shift, and Forza 3.
First out of the blocks is Need for Speed: Shift. It is set to successfully redefine this long running series, which peaked in popularity thanks to the Fast and the Furious movie franchise, and most notably showcases a First-Person view that seems to pwn Gran Turismo’s First Person view. It is also the most arcade game feeling out of the other two competitors, and its biggest draw card is it’s availability on all consoles. What about graphics? It looks up to par with GT 5 Prologue, which is stellar. The 24th of this month is the confirmed release date on the PS3, 360 and PC.
Forza 3, referred to as the 360’s Gran Turismo but better, has been the next gen adversary to GT, besides Project Gotham. What can get Sony fanboy’s worried is the game’s physics engine, known around to be more realistic than GT. It is also known to have a more accessible interface and career mode than PS3’s driving simulator. Of course, the graphics of the cars and tracks are beautiful to watch. Palgn, Australia’s guidebook to video game release dates, states Forza’s release on the first of January, which could be set to change.
Gran Turismo (GT) 5, for racing gamers, is known as the most realistic driving simulator in the gaming spectrum. Over a thousand cars and 80 tracks have been promised and a recent tech demo showcased a rather lackluster but highly anticipated car-damage system. Sony hasn’t revealed a solid release date for this year, but there have been many signs of a December release. In late 2008, Sony Europe representative, James Armstrong, expected a Christmas release this year. Just recently, PSX Extreme discovered the game set to be bundled with a PS3 slim for December 04, of course these are all rumors, but it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if the official announcement is made later this year.
For Australian’s driving fans, the Bathurst V8’s is just a month away and the release of Need for Speed: Shift shortly before, let the Racing season begin!
