R4 officially Illegal in UK

July 29th 2010 01:54

Nintendo won some form of justice yesterday, in the form of a British High Court ruling the ban of R4 cards in the United Kingdom.

The ruling marks the R4, a DS cartridge-sized hardware commonly used to store downloaded games to play, illegal. The ban includes selling, advertising and importing.

This means amateur UK game designers cannot use the defence of using R4s for simply creating homebrew games.

UK based games website, Develop, reported Nintendo’s response to their continuing efforts to ban devices like the R4. “Nintendo initiates these actions not only on its own behalf, but also on behalf of over 1,400 video game-development companies that depend on legitimate sales of games for their survival.”

According to a Japanese report 3 weeks ago, profits of up to $41 billion were lost to software piracy from 2004 to 2009.
