Can’t get into Minecraft and help build the ship from Star Trek this morning? Well it’s because disgruntled users had put up a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS) on the Minecraft server.
The attack prevents creator Markus “Notch” Persson from updating the game… How ironic. He had told Giant Bomb the guys hosting the server are dealing with the problem, while he is working on a Halloween update adding “a new realm, fishing, jack-o-lanterns, six new block types and more.”
Kotaku then reported on a post on 4chan claiming responsibility of the attack. Basically saying there is over 83,000 bots available to continue the DDoS unless Persson provide updates he promised.
The post claims it would stop in a week if Persson changes his attitude towards updating the game he created. It is worth noting the claim cannot be verified. So take this with a grain of salt.
A DDoS is the hacker taking over multiple computer drones, often in the thousands, and command all of them to send packets of information to one destination to overloading it. Any users, including Persson, would not be able to get through the overwhelming amount of packets sent by the drones, disabling any legitimate access to Minecraft.
