Controversial mission not a deterrent to massive Modern Warfare sales!
Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick, officially announced the Modern Warefare 2 sales over five days two days ago: $550 million; over half a billion dollars!
The airport level drops the player in as an undercover agent given the choice to do a terrorist action in a Russian airport.
This sparked controversy as the level focus shifts to the option of killing innocent bystanders, instead of the obligatory Nazi soldier.
Could the amount of money, which Gamasutra described as sales destroying Grand Theft Auto 4’s video game sales record, be contributed from the amount of hype it generated because of the level? Maybe. Or it could be because it’s the successor to one of the greater games of all time. Maybe.
Regardless of the speculation, the sales numbers shown means there will be room for more controversy to be made in the future, if the games developers, Infinity Ward, choose to do so and can.
