Happy New Year to You and the VG Industry
January 3rd 2011 20:10
I've given up wearing belts after eating a monstrous amount of food during the Christmas and New Years period. My waist expanded more than I ever expected. There's only one way a gamer like me can fix this... Exercise!
While I look forward to running laps around the backyard to get my body in shape, I'm looking foward for my other senses to be thoroughly stimulated. Last year, my eyes have been glued to a hundred ghosts getting eaten by Pac-Man. My ears were dancing to the catchy tunes of the Super Meat Boy Soundtrack. My fingers were in constant pain after long sessions of Call of Duty: Black Ops. The nostalgic part of my brain was satisfied when Transformers: War for Cybertron brough back fond memories of a cartoon series I grew up watching when I was a kid. And the rest of my mind was blown by the micro and macro managing during a StarCraft 2 multiplayer match.
Yes, 2010 was a fun-filled year for my favourite past-time. Now I'm looking foward to this year's sequels and original titles. Who will be the next Bayonetta? And will Mass Effect 3 bring a satisfying conclusion to a galaxy-sized story? Which company will make another bad PR stunt? (I'm looking at you Ubisoft for Splinter Cell: Conviction!). Regardless what happens, I'm happy to be in this new year. Not just for the games, but for the many yet-to-be written experiences for me, my friends, and for you, the reader.
There will be ups and downs, but like last year, the most important part when we get to the end of the year: is we survived. When we survive, we get the chance to make decisions which can shape our and everyones future. It allows such original IPs like Heavy Rain and Cut the Rope to become reality, and in Pac-Man's case, make a classic game better. Is that even possible? Of course it is: it's on PSN and Xbox Live right now. I might be sounding preachy just then, but I believe it's true.
Have a great new year everyone!
