Boy bashed over trash talk on DotA

October 22nd 2010 23:33

A boy was bashed by 4 to 5 people in their late teens at his school last Monday after his Defence of the Ancients (DotA) team beat and berated them in online multiplayer.

The Vancouver Sun reported the perpetrators found out where the victim lived, armed themselves with batons, and made him kiss their feet before breaking his fingers.

Vancouver police’s Constable Lindsey Houghton views the case as a rare occurrence.

“I guess some people take these things exceptionally seriously ... It’s something that is exceptionally rare, given the number of people who play video games.”

I hope she meant over 72% of Americans when referring to the number of people who play video games.

Three months ago a 15 year old girl strangled a 4-year old girl for her money in Vietnam. And there had been common reports of deaths from playing World of WarCraft for too long. And a bizarre suicide when a gamer decided to take his life after his character died in-game.

It can be genuinely shocking to read reports such as this; it not only hurts the victim, but also the video game culture.
