Are video games a waste of time?

May 30th 2010 01:22
Yes, like everything else is a waste of time.

But it is a trick question because the quality of time depends on the motivations of each of us. Like saying going to work, playing sports and watching Lost is a waste of time. Of course work isn’t considered a waste because it’s bringing food to the table. Playing sports help the body improve itself and is a great way to socialise with other people. The quality of watching Lost is like watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy back to back to back: you’re investing a significant amount of time into both for the pure enjoyment of the story to escape from the stress that is reality.

I think a waste of time when video games are concerned, is when playing becomes unenjoyable. You know, spending 60 hours into a video game, thinking it’s going to be great because of all the hyperbole from the press and friends, only to finish the game and curse the day you picked it up for full price. It could have been a broken play mechanics, or an uninvolving storyline. Either way, other games could have been played when the experience hasn’t lived up to the time invested.

I’m not going to single out on any games because there will always be someone in the gaming spectrum, crazy or not, that will love it. And it boils down to taste. Every gamer is different, and everyone who isn’t a gamer isn’t a stranger to this notion. I can admit I liked the Street Fighter Movie with Jean Claude Van Damme and even bought it on Blu-Ray. Probably the only game that everyone can agree on hating is 1982’s ET, but there will always be games loved for one reason or another, no matter how many critics pan it.

My verdict to this question to gamers is that video games aren’t a waste of time. If you enjoy playing Leisure Suit Larry, than keep on gaming. Continue playing games you enjoy. Just take care of your health, enjoy the time you have with loved ones. Prioritise what is important. And feel reassured that it’s ok to kick Sepheroth’s ass the 30th time.
