40GB PS3 A Good Move For Sony?
October 10th 2007 14:44
Is smaller better or does size really matter?
According to Gamasutra, The new face of Sony’s PS3 is a smaller hard drive size, lack of memory card ports, no backwards compatability and two, instead of four, USB ports… But will be marginally cheaper.
The lack of memory card ports and backwards playability is a sign of cutting all strings from its PS2 brethren, and a large piece off the gaming market. This is quite daring for Sony since most people who play on consoles has a PS2.
Does the plus out weigh all the negatives? It is still a big deal to fork over hundreds of dollars over this new, reduced model for the current 60gb that is around $200 more, but with an added catalogue of PS2 games to its library.
To counter the lack of games on the PS3 and shutting out the PS2 library, Sony promises 65 PS3 titles by the end of the year.
Sony Europe President, David Reeves, said the decision to turn the 40gb PS3 as a solo console was made after “extensive research” in what next generation gamers want.
“Configured to the needs of the next generation of European PS3 owners. PS3 has always been the device of choice for the discerning gamer and entertainment seeker, and the new PS3 is more than ever the perfect High Definition entertainment system."
Sadly for this gamer, who can’t afford a high definition TV, its still early to jump on the Sony wagon just now, especially how I would be paying for a console that won’t play any of my old games whenever I feel nostalgic. Nintendo and Microsoft made the right move, but I don’t know about Sony…
The only thing going right for them is Blu-Ray in the High Definition DVD wars, and this price drop could be what it takes for more people to get into Blu-Ray. This can be a positive help for the format since losing movie studios Paramount and Dreamworks to HD DVD.
The 40gb PS3 will come in Ceramic White when its released on November 11 in Japan for 39,980 yen while Europe will have their console today.
