3DS Announcement Explained
April 3rd 2010 00:25
Move over tubby, the new handheld is on the block...
Why the announcement when the Nintendo XL (the latest version of the Nintendo DS) hasn't even been released yet?
Marketing analysts, M2 research, peeked CNBC's curiosity stating the "Japanese press was all over it" and Nintendo wanted to prevent the news from leaking by... Announcing the system early.
This is clearly the wrong decision from a marketing point of view, in terms of its impact on the Nintendo XL market and the money that has been invested. It certainly swayed my decision away from buying it because there is no significant reason to.
Features rumored to be on the 3DS includes tilt control, a joy stick, improved graphics, DS and DSi compatibility, the same 2 screens and of course, 3D without glasses.
So what does the XL have to offer other than a bigger screen and tilting closer from what is deemed as a reasonable handheld? A larger screen meant better precision gameplay, clearer read of text and improved battery life from the original DSi; 13-17 hours to 9-14 hours at the lowest brightness setting. There is nothing much the DS fat can offer.
The official revealing of Nintendo's next generation of handhelds: the 3DS, will be at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, in Los Angeles on June 15,2010.
